Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100Per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people
Example
On an $84.50 bill, a 20% tip is $16.90, making $101.40, or $50.70 each for two people. Shortcut: 10% is $8.45; double it for 20%.
Questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is common. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional; tipping on the total is simpler and a little more generous.
What is a normal tip in the US?
Customs vary by service and region; for sit-down restaurants many people tip 15% to 20%.
