Sales Tax Calculator
Add tax to a price, or strip it out of a total to find the pre-tax amount.
| Sales tax | $6.25 |
|---|---|
| Total with tax | $106.25 |
How to use it
- Choose whether you're adding tax or removing it.
- Enter the amount and your combined state and local rate.
Formula
Total = price × (1 + rate ÷ 100)Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Example
At a 6.25% rate, a $100 item costs $106.25. Working backward, a $106.25 receipt total had $6.25 of tax in it. Note: you can't just subtract 6.25% of the total; that would give $99.61.
Questions
What sales tax rate should I use?
Use your state rate plus any county or city rate. Your state revenue department publishes the current rates.
Why doesn't subtracting the percent work?
The tax was calculated on the smaller pre-tax price, so you must divide by (1 + rate), not subtract.
