How to use it
- Enter each day's start and end time and the unpaid break in minutes. Leave days off blank.
- An end time earlier than the start counts as an overnight shift.
- Add your hourly rate to see pay. Overtime starts after 40 hours in a week by default.
Formula
Day minutes = end − start (+24 h if overnight) − breakRegular hours = lower of total hours and the overtime thresholdGross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × overtime multiplier
Example
Four days of 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with 30-minute breaks are 8 hours each, and Friday 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM with a 30-minute break is 9.5 hours, for 41.5 hours. At $20 an hour that is 40 × $20 = $800 regular plus 1.5 × $20 × 1.5 = $45 overtime, $845 gross.
Questions
Who gets overtime?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also count daily overtime; check your state's labor department.
Are breaks paid?
Federal rules treat short breaks (usually 5 to 20 minutes) as paid work time and bona fide meal periods (usually 30 minutes or more) as unpaid. Enter only unpaid break time.
Is the pay before or after taxes?
Before. It is gross pay; taxes and deductions come out of it.
