Gravel Calculator
Find how many cubic yards and tons of gravel or crushed stone to order for an area.
| Cubic yards | 0.93 |
|---|---|
| Tons (at 1.4 tons per yd³) | 1.3 |
| Cubic feet | 25 |
How to use it
- Enter the length and width of the area in feet and the depth in inches.
- Leave the weight at 1.4 tons per cubic yard or use the figure your supplier gives for the stone you're buying.
- Enter a price per ton to estimate the cost.
Formula
Cubic feet = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 12Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27Tons = cubic yards × tons per cubic yard
Example
A 10 ft × 10 ft area 3 inches deep needs 25 ft³ = 0.93 cubic yards, which at 1.4 tons per yd³ is 1.3 tons. A 20 ft × 10 ft path 4 inches deep needs 2.47 yd³, about 3.46 tons, or $138.27 at $40 a ton.
Questions
How much does a yard of gravel weigh?
It depends on the stone and moisture. Clean crushed stone is often quoted around 1.35 to 1.4 tons per cubic yard, and denser mixes like crusher run more. Your supplier's figure is the one to use.
How deep should gravel be?
Paths are often 2 to 3 inches; driveways usually have a deeper base layer topped with finer stone. Follow the plan for your project.
Should I order extra?
Gravel compacts, so many people round up or add about 10%.
